PILOT CLUB DIARY OF EVENTS JANUARY 2017

AND COMING EVENTS FOR FEBRUARY 2017

JANUARY 2017

In addition to the printed Pilot Club programme,
which is posted to all members, with advance notice of events for the coming
month, our club also uses email to members for late events – that is, events
that members were unable to offer in time for the printed programme. In January
there were quite a number of late events, so we had a large and varied choice
of activities.

In January there was a special Pilot Club
post-Christmas dinner and dance at the Noke Hotel in Chiswell Green, which was
well-attended and enjoyable.

There was a trip to see “The Red Shoes”, Matthew
Bourne’s ballet, at Sadlers Wells. Films included “Fantastic Beasts and How to
Find Them”, “The Girl on the Train” and “The Light Between the Oceans”, at The
Arena, St Albans; and “T2 Trainspotting” at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City;
plus a live screening of “Amadeus” at The Arena. Theatre was “One Man, Two Guvnors” at The
Barn, Welwyn Garden City. Another event was a visit to see “Space Odyssey”, by
the St
Albans Circus School, in Harpenden. There was also a quiz in Harpenden, and another quiz
in Fleetville; and a pot-luck supper at a member’s house in Hemel Hempstead.

Dancers went to dance to the music of Eddie the
Editor in Edgware.

Daytime events included visits to “Masterpieces of
Medieval Embroidery” at the V&A; to “South Africa – the art of a Nation” at the British Museum; and to the new Design Museum and the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington. Travel to these exhibitions
was by train. There was also a visit to a Pop-Up Auction in Welwyn, to sell or
buy, or just to enjoy seeing what prices were achieved by the lots. Some
members joined a U3A trip to The Foundling Museum in London.

Our pub nights were at the King William IV in St Albans; the Green Dragon in London Colney; and the Prae
Wood Hotel in St Albans. Our first Tuesday lunch was at a pub on the Hatfield Road; and members went to the Monday night quiz at the
same pub.

Coming Up in February 2017

Our February pub nights will be at The Waterend
Barn, St Albans, with an optional meal beforehand: at The Ski Centre, Hemel
Hempstead, again with optional meal beforehand; at The Prae Wood Hotel, St
Albans; and at The Green Dragon, London Colney. Our first Tuesday lunch will be
at our popular pub on the Hatfield road. As usual, members will go to the
Monday night quiz at the same pub.

Evenings out will include the plays “Uncle Vanya”
at Maltings Theatre, St Albans; and “Rope” at the Abbey Theatre, St Albans.
There will be two fun evenings in members’ homes, one playing parlour games,
and the other playing “Uno”. There will be a visit to a concert by Irish singer
Nathan Carter at the Arena, St
Albans. Some members will
go to a slide-lecture at Radlett Art Society on “Manet and his Milieu”.

Dancers will go to the British Legion, Edgware, to
dance to the music of Mr Wonderful. Walkers will walk from Toulmin Drive, St
Albans, for a 4.5 mile
walk.

Days out will include a visit to the V&A museum
to see ”Records and Rebels 1966-1970”; and to the British Library to see “Maps
of the 20th Century”. On our trips to London we use senior or group-save train tickets (with
one-third off), and we buy 2for1 exhibition tickets where possible.

There will also be a new Pilot venture, bi-monthly
flower arranging and craft groups in Marshalswick, St Albans.

If you think you might like
to have company to enjoy some of these events, or if you would like to put your
own choice of event in our club programme, then contact our new members’
organiser using the box on the main page of this website
